Famous for its delectable steaks and pristine beaches, Uruguay has taken a significant step to attract remote workers with its newly launched digital nomad visa. This South American destination, often overlooked by digital nomads, now offers an enticing opportunity to combine work and leisure in an idyllic setting.

How to get Uruguay’s digital nomad visa?

Unlike many other countries, Uruguay's digital nomad visa stands out for its simplicity and accessibility. The application process is remarkably straightforward, and there is no minimum income requirement. What's more, the entire process can be completed online, making it hassle-free for aspiring digital nomads.

Recognizing the importance of the tech industry, Uruguay's government provides a significant advantage to digital nomads working in technology. Tech companies and specialists in the country are eligible for different tax exemptions, which creates a favorable environment for tech-savvy professionals.

Applying for Uruguay's digital nomad visa is a breeze. Individuals who work remotely for foreign companies or are self-employed can submit their applications individually. The process begins after entering the country as a tourist, where applicants can fill out the online form available on the government's website. In order to do this, you should first create a digital ID. Providing personal information and a written statement confirming sufficient funds to sustain oneself during the stay are the primary requirements.

Once the application is submitted and the nominal fee of approximately €9 is paid, the digital nomad visa permit will be issued via email. This permit grants a stay of up to 180 days in Uruguay, offering ample time to enjoy the country's renowned steaks, embrace the high standard of living, and unwind on the breathtaking beaches.

If digital nomads wish to extend their stay beyond the initial 180 days, Uruguay has a few additional requirements in place. For those seeking an extension of up to one year, a clean criminal record from countries of residence for more than six months within the past five years is necessary. Additionally, a vaccination certificate issued in Uruguay is mandatory.

Uruguay's venture into digital nomad visas reflects a growing global trend of countries embracing remote work and providing attractive opportunities for location-independent professionals. Joining the ranks of other countries such as Estonia, Barbados, Bermuda, Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Georgia, Greece, Iceland, Portugal, and Spain, Uruguay has now positioned itself as a welcoming destination for digital nomads.
